The Learning Lab’s Teaching & Learning Model

Your child’s education matters. At The Learning Lab, we understand that your child learns best in ways that are unique to him or her.

A rich and meaningful learning journey begins with a motivated learner and as The Learning Lab inspires every student to love learning, we know that it starts from understanding what your child needs to succeed.

Watch this video to find out how our programmes equip your child with the knowledge, skills and dispositions to succeed.

The 3 elements that lead to success

Knowledge

Your child will acquire the relevant content knowledge he or she needs at each stage of the academic journey. This includes knowledge of subject-specific topics and themes that are relevant to your child’s schoolwork for each year as well as general knowledge about the people, places and events that will further stimulate your child’s intellectual curiosity.

Skills

Your child will learn skills that are related to life, day-to-day learning and formal assessments. In class, teachers help your child train subject-specific skills to tackle each examinable component or topic for the season. A strong focus on metacognition and communication means that your child will learn in a meaningful way by thinking deeply and reflectively whilst learning to articulate his or her thoughts in a coherent and logical manner.

Dispositions

Your child’s education at TLL is about nurturing his or her whole person. Our programmes recognise the invaluable importance of helping your child develop positive attitudes, habits and mindsets towards learning as a journey. Through our lessons and classroom interactions, watch your child blossom into a student who has self-awareness and a growth mindset — always planning for the next stage of success and progress.

The right learning focus at every stage

Effective learning for your child begins with a teaching and learning model that is well planned.

It starts with your child at the centre of his or her learning journey with us, with his or her needs, goals and dreams, and it continues with a commitment to help your child achieve his or her best at every stage.

At every level, your child needs to have the right balance between learning and performance. At the earlier stages, the focus would be more on enabling your child to be an effective learner, while at the later stages, your child’s needs would be more focused on performing well academically.

Our programmes are specially tailored to ensure the right balance for your child’s specific needs at every level.

Key features of our KSD Model

Our Teaching and Learning Model guides our teachers to facilitate the development and nurturing of these learning characteristics.

Growth Mindset

When your child has a growth mindset, he or she believes that it is possible to learn and improve from mistakes, and that challenges are part and parcel of the learning process.

This enables your child to develop a positive attitude to embrace challenges.

Professor Carol Dweck’s research emphasises how student mindsets, perceptions and attitudes can determine how well they perform academically in school. Dweck’s research clearly points to the advantages of students with a growth mindset over those with a fixed mindset.

With a growth mindset, your child will be able to face challenges and overcome failure, rather than seeing himself or herself as being unable to change or improve.

Metacognition

Metacognition, defined as the awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes, is key to deep learning.

By being aware of his or her thought processes, your child is better able to refine their problem-solving skills and address challenges.

Metacognition helps your child think about how he or she thinks and learns.

Your child will have a better understanding of his or her areas of strength and weakness, identify why it is an area of strength or weakness and map out ways in which to improve. This sense of self-awareness will help your child plan for his or her learning more effectively.

Awareness & Self-control

Your child will become a more reflective learner who is able to assess their rate of progress through each term. Additionally, your child will also be able to think critically about what and how he or she learns.

Your child will become well-versed in goal setting and in mapping out achievable steps to reach his or her goals.

Why does this matter? He or she will become a more reflective learner, be able to consider and appreciate what he or she is learning as well as how he or she learns.

Developing self-awareness and control will help your child better monitor his or her own work and make positive progress at each stage of his or her academic development.

Exam Excellence

Your child will learn how to read critically and analyse task requirements, developing an understanding of what examiners look out for in the exams by applying the most appropriate techniques to identify and analyse question requirements.

We help your child develop ‘exam-smartness’ — what world-renowned educational researcher, Professor John Hattie, refers to as ‘success criteria’.

Your child will be taught to approach tasks, such as classwork, tests or exams, methodically by managing time wisely and applying the most appropriate techniques to identify and analyse question requirements.

We also use research-attested ‘formative testing’ techniques that help your child become familiar with low-stakes test-taking, thereby focusing his or her attention to learning.
