In the first year of secondary school, your child will be exposed to a wide range of reading and writing tasks.

Content and Language Mastery
Students will be introduced to the examinable components at the secondary level and their assessment requirements. These include:
• summary
• literary analysis of unseen poetry and unseen prose
• comprehension
• composition

Students will also be exposed to a new format of editing that requires identifying and correcting common grammatical errors.

Through our comprehension, summary and critical thinking passages, our programme covers a wide range of general knowledge topics and current affairs to help students develop a global perspective. These topics include:
• education and the environment
• global issues and social trends
• arts and the humanities

Skills and Techniques
Students will continue to build on their reading and writing skills through our weekly lessons. These include:
• building their writing skills by learning how to express their thoughts and opinions in an organised and fluent manner
• honing their comprehension skills by learning how to identify question types and recognise corresponding question requirements
• improving their summary skills by learning how to locate relevant information within a text and summarise content in a coherent manner

Students are also trained in their time management skills through practice tests in simulated exam conditions.

Our Secondary 1 Mathematics programme focuses on building an interest in more abstract mathematical concepts through a variety of investigative activities and lesson plans.

Content Mastery
• Students will learn about the classification of numbers based on number properties, and find the highest common factor and lowest common multiple of numbers using prime factorisation.
• Students will explore the concept of variables and learn how the relationship between two variables can be represented in algebraic, tabular and graphical forms.
• Students will be exposed to a variety of real-life contexts, including travel plans, transport schedules, recipes, etc.
• Students will learn terminologies related to personal and household finance, such as interests, instalments, utilities bills, and exchange rates.

Skills and Techniques
• Students will learn to use algebra and other symbols to represent and convey mathematical ideas.
• Students will be guided on the application of algebraic equations to a variety of problems and on solving the problems using a systematic and logical approach.
• Students will acquire basic manipulative skills, such as Rounding Off, Arithmetic and Algebraic Manipulation and Data Handling.

Science, at secondary one, encompasses elements of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Your child will learn an entirely new range of skills required for scientific inquiry.

Content Mastery
• Students will be introduced to General Science topics such as Laboratory Safety and Apparatus.
• Students learn more in-depth scientific concepts from topics in Biology such as Cells and Movement of Substances.
• Students learn more in-depth scientific concepts from topics in Chemistry such as Elements, Compounds and Mixtures, and Separation Techniques.
• Students learn more in-depth scientific concepts from topics in Physics such as Physical Quantities, and Mass, Weight and Density.

Skills and Techniques
• Students acquire question analysis skills to interpret information and the provided data appropriately.
• Students will have greater exposure to questions that involve experimental skills such as identifying constant, changed or measured variables.
• Students will learns how experiments are conducted and how to write and record experiment procedures.
• Students will learn to compare the concepts and identify the similarities and differences between them. For example, students will learn about the similarity between a solution and a suspension, and the differences between a bacterium and a typical plant cell.
• Students will cover biological drawing in greater detail and more precision.
